3 of 4 done

- Done

**Finds your copy**
Picks up the install on its own, from Steam or wherever it lives.
- Done

**Reads every file**
Every file reads straight from your copy, in the order the game itself looks them up.
- Done

**Matches players' copies**
Your copy is fingerprinted from its own files, so a server can check everyone's match without sending any game content.
- Partial

**Brings its mods**
Custom stories are found and fingerprinted, but stay off for now. Checked on test installs, since the checked copy had none.

## Where it stands

Evil Engine finds the Dark Descent on its own and reads it the way the game does: by file name, across the folders its `resources.cfg` lists, with the game’s own rule deciding which file wins when two share a name. That’s a little over 11,600 files. Justine, the second game in the same files, mounts from the same copy as a game of its own.

Your copy is fingerprinted in parts: the props, each of the Dark Descent’s 33 maps and Justine’s four, the sounds, the voices, the interface, the scripts, the settings and the developer commentary. Every one of those files, 1.5 GB in all, matched Steam’s own checksums.

## Known issues

- The game’s own files point at 15 files the install doesn’t have, and 9 for Justine. They’re slips in the game itself, and each is noted rather than guessed at.
- Only the Linux copy has been checked. A Windows copy should mount the same way, but hasn’t been tried.

## Next up

- A real custom story, to check how they’re set up in the wild.
- A Windows copy, to check it reads the same.
- Converting its meshes, maps, materials and sounds.

## About Evil Engine

Evil Engine is a **passthrough modding** engine by Pushbar Interactive. Modding through the games you already own instead of around them: the content comes from each player's own copy and is never extracted, ported or redistributed. The term took off in September 2026 with mods that run two games at once and wire them together by hand, one pair at a time. Evil Engine comes from that lineage and makes the process repeatable: it learns each engine once, maps each game onto shared vocabularies once, and gives mods one API, so every mounted game works with every other.
