## Mounting

4 of 4 done

- Done

**Finds your copy**
Picks up the install on its own, from Steam or wherever it lives.
- Done

**Reads every file**
Every file reads straight from your copy, in the order the game itself looks them up.
- Done

**Matches players' copies**
Your copy is fingerprinted from its own files, so a server can check everyone's match without sending any game content.
- Done

**Brings its mods**
Add-ons in addons/ and addons/workshop/, with addonlist.txt turning them off. Checked on test installs, since the checked copy had none.

## Converting

0 of 4 done

- To do

**Models**
Source's model converter works for Garry's Mod. It isn't hooked up to Left 4 Dead 2 yet.
- To do

**Textures and materials**
Waits on a table of Left 4 Dead 2's own shader settings.
- To do

**Maps**
Its maps are a newer version than Source's map converter reads so far, the same as Portal 2's.
- To do

**Sounds**
Its sounds turn into Evil Engine sounds.

## In game

0 of 3 done

- To do

**Shows on screen**
Converted content actually draws in Evil Engine.
- To do

**In the spawn menu**
Its props and models land in your spawn menu, no Plugin needed.
- To do

**Maps you can visit**
Pick one of its maps from the menu and fly around inside it.

## Where it stands

Evil Engine finds Left 4 Dead 2 on its own and reads it in the order its own `gameinfo.txt` lists, archives before any loose files: your add-ons on top, then the update folder, the three DLC folders, the base game and its Half-Life 2 shaders, then the engine’s shared `platform` folder. That’s five archives over seven folders, a little over 99,000 files. Which update you have is read from the game’s own engine.

Your copy is fingerprinted as one part covering everything the game ships, and every file in it matched Steam’s own checksums. Every file in the mount reads back in full.

## Known issues

- The copy checked had never been launched, so what the game writes on its first run hasn’t been seen yet.
- The order, and which add-on wins when two hold the same file, haven’t been checked against the game’s own `path` command yet.
- Add-ons don’t show their titles yet.
- Only the Linux copy in English has been looked at. Language folders of a non-English copy aren’t mounted yet.

## Next up

- Checking the search order and the add-on rules against the game’s own `path` command.
- Add-ons as items, with their titles from each one’s `addoninfo.txt`.
- A converter for its newer maps, shared with Portal 2, and Source’s other converters hooked up with a table from Left 4 Dead 2’s own shaders.

## About Evil Engine

Evil Engine is a **passthrough modding** engine by Pushbar Interactive. Modding through the games you already own instead of around them: the content comes from each player's own copy and is never extracted, ported or redistributed. The term took off in September 2026 with mods that run two games at once and wire them together by hand, one pair at a time. Evil Engine comes from that lineage and makes the process repeatable: it learns each engine once, maps each game onto shared vocabularies once, and gives mods one API, so every mounted game works with every other.
