# Quake

Both editions mount from one install, and all 244 of their maps load from the Singleplayer menu in each edition's own look. Models and sounds don't convert yet.

- **Ticket**: #020
- **Checked on**: Steam, Windows build under Proton
- **Last checked**: November 1, 2026
- **Files**: 3,224
- **Mount**: `quake/pc/1.06, quake-rerelease/pc/20260905.155731`

## Mounting

3 of 4 done

- Done

**Finds your copy**
Picks up the install on its own, from Steam or wherever it lives.
- Done

**Reads every file**
Every file reads straight from your copy, in the order the game itself looks them up.
- Done

**Matches players' copies**
Your copy is fingerprinted from its own files, so a server can check everyone's match without sending any game content.
- Partial

**Brings its mods**
Mod folders beside id1 are found and fingerprinted, but stay off for now. The rerelease's add-ons wait on one being downloaded.

## Converting

1 of 4 done

- To do

**Models**
Only the maps' own geometry. Monsters, weapons and items aren't converted yet.
- Partial

**Textures and materials**
Map textures convert, in each edition's own look. Model skins, HUD pictures and the rerelease's skyboxes don't yet.
- Done

**Maps**
All 244, with nothing failing. Clip brushes, and the rerelease's skyboxes and fog, are left out for now.
- To do

**Sounds**
Its sounds turn into Evil Engine sounds.

## In game

2 of 3 done

- Done

**Shows on screen**
The original draws like its software renderer, the rerelease like the rerelease.
- To do

**In the spawn menu**
Its props and models land in your spawn menu, no Plugin needed.
- Done

**Maps you can visit**
Both editions, from Singleplayer.

## Where it stands

Evil Engine finds Quake on its own and mounts both editions in the install as two games, since they sit side by side and share no files: the 1996 original, 715 files across `id1` and its two mission packs, and the rerelease, 2,509 files across its seven game folders. Each game folder is fingerprinted on its own with `id1` under it, so a server running one of the rerelease’s episodes only asks for that one. Every file matched Steam’s own checksums.

Every map of both editions, 73 from the original and 171 from the rerelease, converts and loads from the Singleplayer menu with nothing failing, listed by the game’s own level names, and you can fly around inside it. The original draws the way its software renderer did, every pixel one of the game’s 256 palette colours. The rerelease draws its own look, worked out from screenshots of the rerelease and matching them closely from the same spot. The monsters, weapons and items that fill those levels aren’t converted yet, so the maps are empty for now.

## Known issues

- Clip brushes, the invisible walls that keep players out of corners, are left out until the collision format can carry them.
- The rerelease’s skybox images and fog aren’t read yet, and neither are the smoothed surface normals in Dawn of the Machine, so its surfaces shade flat.
- The original’s look was built from a written description of its renderer and hasn’t been compared against the original running yet. The rerelease’s water ripple and sky smoothing still need checking against screenshots with them in view.
- In the map list, the rerelease’s maps are grouped by folder name (`mg3`, `dopa`) rather than by episode.

## Next up

- The rerelease’s skyboxes and fog, and the smoothed normals.
- Checking the original’s look against the game itself, once it runs.
- A first launch of each edition and a downloaded add-on, to see what they write and where, before mods and add-ons can be turned on.

## About Evil Engine

Evil Engine is a **passthrough modding** engine by Pushbar Interactive. Modding through the games you already own instead of around them: the content comes from each player's own copy and is never extracted, ported or redistributed. The term took off in September 2026 with mods that run two games at once and wire them together by hand, one pair at a time. Evil Engine comes from that lineage and makes the process repeatable: it learns each engine once, maps each game onto shared vocabularies once, and gives mods one API, so every mounted game works with every other.
