Where it stands
Evil Engine finds Left 4 Dead 2 on its own and reads it in the order its own gameinfo.txt lists, archives before any loose files: your add-ons on top, then the update folder, the three DLC folders, the base game and its Half-Life 2 shaders, then the engine’s shared platform folder. That’s five archives over seven folders, a little over 99,000 files. Which update you have is read from the game’s own engine.
Your copy is fingerprinted as one part covering everything the game ships, and every file in it matched Steam’s own checksums. Every file in the mount reads back in full.
Known issues
- The copy checked had never been launched, so what the game writes on its first run hasn’t been seen yet.
- The order, and which add-on wins when two hold the same file, haven’t been checked against the game’s own
pathcommand yet. - Add-ons don’t show their titles yet.
- Only the Linux copy in English has been looked at. Language folders of a non-English copy aren’t mounted yet.
Next up
- Checking the search order and the add-on rules against the game’s own
pathcommand. - Add-ons as items, with their titles from each one’s
addoninfo.txt. - A converter for its newer maps, shared with Portal 2, and Source’s other converters hooked up with a table from Left 4 Dead 2’s own shaders.
