  • Done

    Finds your copy

Picks up the install on its own, from Steam or wherever it lives.

  • Done

    Reads every file

Every file reads straight from your copy, in the order the game itself looks them up.

  • Done

    Matches players' copies

Your copy is fingerprinted from its own files, so a server can check everyone's match without sending any game content.

  • Done

    Brings its mods

Mods in the game's Mods folder mount over it. Checked on test installs only, since the checked copy has none.

Where it stands

Evil Engine finds Satisfactory on its own and reads its two big Unreal archives where they sit, without unpacking anything: 13,576 files in one and 34,997 in the other, laid over the install. Nearly all of it is compressed with Oodle, which the game ships no way to decode, so Evil Engine has its own decoder, written from a description of the format. Every one of the 59,158 chunks in the larger archive decodes and matches its stored hash, and every compressed file in the other comes out at its listed size, so every file opens.

Your copy is fingerprinted as four parts: game, world, catalogue and community. world is the map and everything it loads, and catalogue is everything you can build or hold, each following the game’s own record of what loads what, so a server running the map only asks for world. Every file matched Steam’s checksums or the archive’s own hashes.

Known issues

  • The game’s own links name 26 packages that aren’t in the install. They’re noted.
  • Only the Windows build has been checked. The Linux build, the experimental branch, the Epic copy and the dedicated server haven’t been looked at yet.

Next up

  • Installing a mod through the community’s mod loader, to check how mods are laid out and whether anything keeps track of which are on.
  • Checking the Linux build, the experimental branch, the Epic copy and the dedicated server.
