Where it stands
Evil Engine reads Skate 3’s PS3 disc in place, from a disc image or a folder copy of the disc, with nothing extracted to your drive. It opens the 31 archives the game keeps its content in and lays them over the disc’s game folder, a little over 28,000 files in all.
Your copy is fingerprinted as 15 parts, named after what they hold: the skating itself, the controls, the skeleton, the characters, the park editor, and one for each of the ten worlds. That way a server can ask for just the skating and one world rather than the whole 7 GB disc. Every format the skating needs was worked out in earlier research and read across the whole disc without a failure, but those tools were throwaway. They’re being rebuilt into Evil Engine properly, starting with the game’s own database files where its tuning lives, and all 509 of those on the disc now read.
Known issues
- Folder copies of the disc and still-encrypted images have only been tried on made-up test discs, since there’s no real one of either yet.
- One music archive on the disc uses a different format and isn’t opened yet.
- Only the PS3 disc mounts. The Xbox 360 disc is planned but not built.
Next up
- The rest of the format readers, in the order the skating needs them: the state machines and flick patterns, then animations, models, and the worlds’ surfaces and rails.
- Converting each of those into Evil Engine’s own formats as those formats are ready.
