  • Done

    Reads every file

Every file reads straight from your copy, in the order the game itself looks them up.

  • Done

    Matches players' copies

Your copy is fingerprinted from its own files, so a server can check everyone's match without sending any game content.

Where it stands

Evil Engine finds Slime Rancher on its own and reads its 591 files as one layer. Everything is in Unity’s own files, with no index of what’s where, so it works out what belongs together from the list each file keeps of the other files it points into, without opening anything inside them. The version, 1.4.3, comes from the game’s own settings.

Your copy is fingerprinted in two parts: everything you can spawn, and the world, which holds the first along with its baked lighting. Every file of both matched Steam’s own checksums.

Known issues

  • Both DLC packs ship inside every copy, and nothing can tell yet whether you own them.
  • Only the Linux version has been checked. Windows and Mac copies, and VR Playground, haven’t been looked at yet.
  • The game hasn’t been launched on the checked copy, so the version it shows hasn’t been compared with the one read from its files.

Next up

  • Launching the game once, to check its version and that nothing in the install changes.
  • Looking at Windows, Mac, VR Playground and modded copies.
